My son, my daughter and I were involved in the Park/Beach clean-up. It was very rewarding to give our time to something one doesn't normally think of as their own responsibility; it gives you a sense of community ownership. Cleaning up litter and debris produces instant results and the Nanaimo water front is such beautiful place already. Additionally the comments from passers by were very warming as well, received quite a few "good for you guys" and "Thanks". (Nanaimo Beach Cleanup)

I had a wonderful time at the 'TELUS Day of Service', Brick by Brick, in Nanaimo. I volunteered to man a BBQ and cooked hotdogs and fried onions. We had visitors from all over including one group from Denmark. Once it was explained that we were raising money to build a school in Kenya, they were happy to donate and bought some hotdogs. It was truly a great day. I am so proud to be part of TELUS and to show what a great corporate citizen TELUS is. Having our little boy with me and showing him the importance to giving back was priceless. (Nanaimo Brick-By-Brick)

Charity Journal

The TELUS event was wonderful. A lot of good work was accomplished with excellent spirit. We built fence, weeded flower beds, tilled a grain plot area, levelled a new lawn area for a tea garden beside the waterway, enjoyed a pizza lunch together and shared endless conversations throughout the entire time. The guys building the fence worked with the skill and determination of Canadian beavers. They used [a powerful hydraulic post hole digger] in a team to drill all the holes while others planted the fence posts. Some even stayed on until well after 5 pm to finish drilling the last holes for the entire fence, wanting to complete the task so we would not have to rent the machine another day.

The spirit of friendship, cooperation and support for the site was thoroughly demonstrated throughout the day. I will be issuing passes for a free visit for the participants. Have hope, take risks and seek balance.

I am writing to pass on my thanks to TELUS and the four wonderful volunteers who came out to help with invasive weed removal at Rithet's Bog on Saturday, May 31.

Lisa, Linda, Rob and Elaine put in 12 hours (3 hours each) of much-appreciated labour by:
- cutting and removing English Ivy that was threatening Black Cottonwood trees
- locating, weeding, mulching and marking 14 Garry Oak seedlings that had been planted as part of a Garry Oak restoration project, and
- cutting and removing broom that had invaded the Garry Oak seedling area

As a result of their efforts, a pickup truck full of ivy and broom were removed from the park; the Garry Oak seedlings will be much healthier without the competition of weeds and with the addition of moisture retaining mulch; and a major broom shrub with massive seed potential was removed from an area which we are attempting to keep broom free.

It is inspiring to think of the contribution TELUS employees will have made throughout the province with their Day of Service.
