Team Journal

What an honor and a pleasure is has been to do something great for the Burnaby community along with my fellow TELUS team members and our families on this beautiful, sunny, Saturday! (Barnet Beach Marine Park)

Carrie Young, TELUS team member

What a great time with friends and family – our hard work was rewarded with the discovery of a tiny bird’s nest and three newly hatched birds inside! We left them undisturbed and only cut the ivy on the tree. What a delight. (Barnet Beach Marine Park)

Tammi Gillespie and Julie Koel, TELUS team member

Had a wonderful time cleaning the park with my husband and two children. It’s great to give back to the community and have fun at the same time. A great day!” (Barnet Beach Marine Park)

Kathy Huml, TELUS team member

Barnet Beach is BEAUTIFUL! This was my 1st time here. It is really important to keep our pockets of paradise safe (Barnet Beach Marine Park)

Patricia Yavis, TELUS team member

It was great to see salmon berries ripening on the bushes - critical to the wildlife - which would otherwise be choked out by the attractive yet damaging English ivy. Such a simple yet important step in the overall food chain (Barnet Beach Marine Park)

Darren Bond, TELUS team member

I had a good time on Saturday, although extremely tired and dirty, but a good feeling knowing TELUS helped the park. Same time next year, I'm ready, willing and hopefully able!!” (Barnet Beach Marine Park)

Gaylene Heibert, TELUS team member

The weather was great, we had a great turn out & my colleagues and I had a blast, still a little sore though, will love to do this again next year. It was a lot of fun, not very often we get to go out and do something like this with our colleagues. (Barnet Beach Marine Park)

Margaret Bosco, TELUS team member

Wow! What a difference a coat of paint makes. Everyone arrived eager to help make a difference at Covenant House. This was the 3rd year that TELUS had been on site and many of the volunteers had been here in the past! It was wonderful to see the transformation of Jamison’s work. Kudo’s to all that helped out! (Covenant House)

Deborah Hobbs, TELUS team member

Our capacity to redeploy our efforts to help out with cleaning-up the elementary school's rooms illustrated our TELUS values and we can be proud of that. (Brunch for Books at Britannia Elementary School)

Emmanuel Mahieu, TELUS team member

Many of the residents and employees told me how grateful they were to TELUS for helping out. They were also very thankful to TELUS for the ongoing contribution for “TELUS Tuesday” which pays for and serves a hot meal every other Tuesday throughout the year. These expressions of thanks to TELUS made me feel truly proud to be a member of the TELUS team! (Salvation Army Harbour Light)

, TELUS team member

The TELUS Day of Service also provided a great opportunity to work with team members in a non-business related activity. It was something to see; the tremendous enthusiasm, energy and dedication of the team in respect to the tasks of cleaning, organizing and serving. (Salvation Army Harbour Light)

It was great to have the family and friends …lend their helping hands alongside our TELUS Finance Operational Wizard team. The diligence of the group left the Salvation Army Harbour Light sparking clean. (Salvation Army Harbour Light)

Tricia Choice, TELUS team member

This was my first time participating in the TELUS Day of Service as I joined the company in November last year. I volunteered to be the VAP for the removal of invasive species at the Ladner Habour Park and it was great fun!

Our activity involved the removal of blackberry bushes that were preventing newly planted Poplar trees from growing as they should. Though the task seemed intimidating at first, we quickly got busy and by the time we were done 2 hours later, we could instantly see the difference! We even got compliments from the few locals who were at the park. I had a great time, met new people and I am grateful to the organizers for planning the event! (Delta Park and Recreation)

Hazel Muchiri, TELUS team member

I was very proud and excited to participate in the TELUS Day of Service with my two teenagers. Participating in future TELUS events like this will definitely be a priority for our family. Thank you to the organizers who helped make this spirited team event a fun way of giving back to the community. (Delta Park and Recreation)

Juanita Lomax, TELUS team member

The TELUS Day of Service at Ladner Harbour Park or as my teenagers re-named it "Attack of the Invasive Species" provided myself and my family with an opportunity to help our environment. In such a short period of time, our small team removed a significant amount of the pervasive Blackberry bushes; my girls and I felt a real sense of accomplishment. We will definitely be participating in next year's Day of Service event, and will volunteer for an outdoor activity in which all of my family can participate. (Delta Park and Recreation)

Kate Nemeth, TELUS team member

The sun was shining, the birds were singing and the blackberry bushes were out of control!

It was explained to us by the Corporation of Delta's landscape specialist that the blackberry bushes were choking out a grove of Poplar trees that had been planted to aid the environment (these trees are known to absorb airborne and waterborne pollution). The task at hand looked daunting as the bushes stood over seven feet tall, but our group of TELUS employees and their families made short work of the thorny brambles, clearing a fence line (on both sides) that measured over 100 feet in the two hours we were given to complete the job. (Delta Park and Recreation)

Cindy McBartney, TELUS team member

It was great; I had so much fun!! It also felt good inside knowing we gave to the community, and knowing how what we did help children… (Surrey Crime Prevention Society)

Sandy Mann, TELUS team member

It was a beautiful day…and with the number of people we had it made the work go quickly and easily. After it was all done, it felt good to be a part of something to help the community. (Surrey Crime Prevention Society)

Greg Harrison, TELUS team member

It is true that a few people can make a difference. I felt tired but it was a great tired. The spirit of the team and children that were out there was incredible. Everyone had such big smiles, despite the many scratches. All I can say is with a team like that, eradicating black berry overgrowth couldn't have been any easier!! (Richmond Terra Nova)

Karen Oyhenart, TELUS team member

We are so often consumed by our day to day activities that tend to forget how much fun it can be to help for a good cause. (Richmond Terra Nova)

Hugo Sampaio, TELUS team member

Its great to see the community get corporate support and participation across the nation. At the end of the day it was rewarding and I felt I had done a good deed for the community. (Richmond Terra Nova)

Nitin Mohan, TELUS team member

This was the first time I was able to participate in the TELUS Day of Service. I was very pleasantly surprised to find many of my team-mates, old and new, participating in the TELUS Day of Service. It was an extremely satisfying experience to have helped in our community, and to share this with my co-workers was very special. (Richmond Terra Nova)

Kulwinder Dhaliwal, TELUS team member

This was also a great opportunity to work along side of my son, who also participated in the event. It gave both of us an opportunity to spend some quality time together helping out for a good cause. Him and I will most certainly lend a helping hand again in the next TELUS volunteer event.” (Richmond Terra Nova)

John Spacek, TELUS team member

It is indeed fun and exciting to take part in TDOS – it was my first time ever that I cut thorns in a rural park. It was so satisfying to see the instant results of the hard work. I felt very happy to have contributed to the overall state of the park by working with other TELUS team members together. I look forward to having such an opportunity again next time. (Richmond Terra Nova)

Jimmy Chan, TELUS team member

The timing couldn't be more perfect - excellent day and excellent engagement from everyone who attended. Volunteers did all assigned tasks diligently while having fun as well. It was a great opportunity to give back and for most that I've talked to, everyone was in agreement that we do not have to wait for this specific time of the year to participate. As long as there are opportunities, there will be volunteers! (Richmond Terra Nova)

Arvin Aguilar, TELUS team member

TELUS day of service was a day where we got to be a part of the community. I had fun and got to meet other TELUS members as well. I hope we continue this practise of participating in our community- being more involved and showing that we do care! It makes me feel proud to be a part of TELUS. (Richmond Terra Nova)

Madhu Sharma, TELUS team member

Aside from contributing to the community, it was also a great team building activity for the QA team. It also served as an inspiration as the activity reinforces TELUS values, and definitely makes you feel proud to be a part of TELUS and QA (Richmond Terra Nova)

Kit Navarro, TELUS team member

Though we were from different teams, it was so amazing to see all of us out there for one common cause as one spirited team. We were able to show our TELUS values not only in the workplace but also in the community where we live. (Richmond Terra Nova)

Shaan Razik, TELUS team member

Great teamwork in the room as we plowed through many receipt booklets to prepare deposit slips and to reconcile cash to receipts. I enjoyed the spirited teamwork of both TELUS and the Canadian Cancer Society team members. (Canadian Cancer Society)

Anonymous, TELUS team member

My wife and I are happy that we were given the opportunity to participate in this activity. It gave us a sense of accomplishment especially when the total on the deposit slips tally with the total amount from the receipts. We will definitely participate in this activity again as soon as next opportunity arises. (Canadian Cancer Society)

What a fantastic day it was on Saturday!!! The work that was done was unbelievable!!! We thank you with all of our hearts.

Judy Stevens, Executive Director, Share the Warmth

Thank-you for the hard work and dedication shown by all TELUS staff and their families in their stewardship of the environment at Barnet Marine Park. I have never seen so much work done from any other group before. Great work! It is much appreciated!

Yota Hatziantoniou, City of Burnaby Planning Dept.

What a perfect day, the sun was shining and there was a nice breeze coming in off the water, just enough to keep everyone cool. The families who came out from TELUS were wonderful. I was amazed that we had people coming in from Burnaby to participate in an event in Ladner. The impact that our small group had on the park is inspirational. So much work done in such a short period of time, everyone who was involved in the Blackberry pull should be very proud. I think everyone learned something, even the kids, and had a good time doing it.

Linsay Jamieson-Powell, Programmer for Volunteers and People with Disabilities, Delta Parks, Rec and Culture

Thank you so much for coordinating the TELUS volunteers for BC Children's Hospital during the TELUS Day of Service. The support of these individuals was invaluable. Please accept our most sincere thanks on behalf of the Foundation, the Hospital staff and most importantly the patients and families we serve everyday.

BC Childrens Hospital, Aaron Sanderson

Although it was a bit of a zoo with just three of us from Habitat to organise and show people what to do, [the TELUS Day of Service] went very, very well.…Approximately a dozen volunteers from TELUS and the TELUS Community Ambassadors (retirees) showed up to help. We got a lot of siding up…on the west side of the house…and more work done on the drywall inside.

Bill Robinson, Vice Chair, Habitat For Humanity Sunshine Coast

We had a great first day out on the trails, and it was thanks to TELUS. I am really happy that we had so many great new volunteers out and learning about where TELUS' Community dollars go to! Thanks again for such a great day!

The most powerful story of the day was Morgan and Marie's. This was Morgan's first day out in the Trail-Rider. By having the Trail-Rider's in Whistler, Morgan will be able to hike on a regular basis with her family. She will also be able to access school field trips that were not accessible to her before.

Marie is also really excited, as for the first time, she is able to get out and enjoy an activity that was not available to her as a parent. Now, she and Morgan can hike as a family and share a sport.

Scott, who was also new to the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program, has just moved back to Pemberton from Victoria. Scott enjoys hiking, and through TELUS' contribution, he will also be able to access some new trails and meet new friends. Thanks to the expanded summer programming, Scott is able to integrate into the Whistler community and share in recreational experiences that he loves!

Chelsey, Whisler Adaptive Sports Program

I’m glad you and the TELUS team had a good time on Saturday. I still can’t believe you finished all three patches of knotweed – unreal! ...Eventually, we’ll be planting native shrubs like rose and salmonberry in this area to help keep the invasive knotweed and blackberry out. We couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, thanks to you guys!

I went back to Fraser River Park today and measured the area we removed knotweed from, as well as the volume of the piles of knotweed removed. Here are the (impressive!) stats for you:

Area of land cleared: 718m2
Volume of knotweed removed: 245m3

Also, thank you again for the generous donation of tools. This really increases our ability to take larger groups out, which is what we want to do! I will look for your coworker’s pair of loppers when I get back to the office on Wednesday. We will definitely get those back to her – sorry about that.

Sarah Anning, River Works Coordinator, Vancovuer Aquarium

Thank you so much for all of your help today - things went incredibly well, and we cleared all of the areas that we had hoped to!

Area Removed: 1580 square meters
Volume Removed: 102.3 cubic meters
Telus Volunteers at site: 185 (I believe we had 153 at the event last year!)
Telus Volunteer Hours: 555 hours, plus 40 volunteer hours from SPES= 595 total volunteer hours

Jillayne Peers, Stewardship Coordinator, Stanley Park Ecology Society

Thank you for including us in the 2008 Day of Service. Our Foundation is pleased to work with TELUS at any time and we very much value the contributions that your employees have made - this year and last year. We have a huge task to eradicate invasive species from our regional parks and the need to use hand tools, so as not to disturb these environmentally sensitive areas, therefore it makes your staff contribution very special.

On behalf of the Foundation please thank your staff that helped us in that day. Their efforts are very much appreciated! We look forward to working with you again.

Laura, Metro Vancouver

TELUS Day of Service was a fantastic success and we would like to sincerely thank everyone who came out - all EIGHT of them!!! They were a small group but what they lacked in size they made up for in effort as they accomplished a LOT in a short amount of time! It was incredibly generous of the TELUS staff to lend their personal vehicles to help move boats to the waterfront.

Aside from how incredibly thankful we are at the Ranch, the lifeguards were especially thankful because it would have taken the two of them a LONG time to do what you did in a morning.

Shannon at the barn and all 9 horses appreciate the newly mulched trails...500 feet down to waterfront!

Terri Otter, Zajac Ranch for Children
